Van Nuys, on 7-17-07 between Noon and 2 p.m. at least 62 patients, caregivers, and medical marijuana advocates gathered and marched from the Federal Building in Van Nuys to Victory boulevard to protest recent DEA letters that have led to the evictions and closures of 18 medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles. The demonstration was going to head back to federal building when a bomb scare was mysteriously called in which had police blocking off the streets, courts complex, and federal buildings, barring demonstrators from gathering back at the federal building. The demonstrators left shortly after with a total of 62 gathering with signs and horns on the corner of Victory Boulevard. One Patient Joked "It's more like a bong scare, and I don't think they wanted to hear what we had to say."
The Patients, Caregivers, and advocates wanted to speak out regarding the recent dispensary closures and the DEA's threats to property owners who allow tenants to run medical marijuana dispensaries. One patient spoke out, " I am on a 60 day list, to die... This is the medicine I choose, they are taking that from me." , while another caregiver spoke out for the tax paying dispensaries. "The dispensaries are paying taxes, to help people, so as tax payers we should be heard as there is no taxation without representation."
Much debate on medical marijuana is obscured between California state laws which allow for medical marijuana and dispensaries, while under federal law marijuana is illegal.
The closures are hinged on a city wide moratorium which is currently being voted on. Once a moratorium is passed there will be a limit on the number of dispensaries allowed and no new dispensaries can be opened.
