Chronicling Jack Herer’s transformation from a pro-Vietnam Goldwater Republican to cultural icon and ultimate crusader for the marijuana movement, Jack Herer is Emperor of Hemp is a movie that everyone should see at least once. If not a few times. There are moments in this film that might make you angry. You might find yourself shaking your head in disbelief or nodding in agreement. Statistics, quotes and snippets of information combine with a well-scored soundtrack while telling the tale of cannabis’ unlikely warrior. Touching on many aspects of marijuana prohibition, Emperor of Hemp not only gives the history of the movement’s most well recognized man; it also provides a compelling argument echoing Herer’s views.
Simply stated, hemp can save the world.
On a self-described mission, Herer has made it his life’s work to educate as many people as he can on the many uses of the cannabis plant. He spent hours digging through the library of Congress just to prove that the United States once promoted hemp, even making the 1942 short USDA film “Hemp for Victory!” His dedication, passion and perseverance are evident in this film about his fight.
Not always accepted by the marijuana reform movement, and a onetime adversary of NORML, Herer’s groundbreaking book The Emperor Has No Clothes changed not only his life, but the lives of many people around the world. His tireless efforts have spanned numerous states, rallies, marches, and conferences.
Despite being an older title, this film still has relevance in today’s world- more so now than ever. It’s tone invites viewers to become active in the fight against marijuana prohibition, and there’s no better example of that fight than Jack Herer.
One bonus feature on this DVD is the inclusion of the 1942 USDA produced short film “Hemp for Victory!”. As far as special features go, it’s fairly straightforward, but I wouldn’t turn the TV off without watching it. It’s an interesting, enlightening peek into a world that was terrified of white kids smoking marijuana but recognized it’s practical uses for food, fiber, rope, and oil.
Whether or not you consider yourself an expert on the history of marijuana, or an activist in the fight against unfair laws and practices, this movie will entertain with it’s lively soundtrack, intriguing subject matter, and deft narration.
