Oakland, May 2 - Measure Z supporters turned out in force at last
night's Oakland City Council meeting, where the Measure Z committee
annual report was presented. An impressive crowd of 45 persons
filled out speakers cards. The showing was admirably organized by
Jaime A. Galindo of Oaksterdam Media.
The Measure Z report
recommended that private adult clubs be zoned in commercial areas, and
estimated the potential economic benefits of a taxed legal marijuana
market in the tens of millions of dollars.
The council listened respectfully as speakers urged the city to
implement Measure Z's goal of private adult clubs. Councilmembers
Brooks & Nadel spoke in support of further implementation of
Measure Z; other members, led by Council President De La Fuente,
expressed doubts about proceeding in the face of current federal
pressure. Advocates plan to keep up the pressure, though no immediate
action is expected given the council's current conservative majority.
