WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In the wake of recent attacks on medical marijuana providers and patients by multiple branches of the federal government, including Monday's raids on Oaksterdam University in Oakland, CA, a coalition of six national drug policy reform organizations is appealing to President Obama and his administration to follow its own previously stated policies respecting state medical marijuana laws. In the letter, posted in full below, the organizations call on the Obama administration to bring an end to the federal government’s ongoing campaign to undermine state efforts to regulate safe and legal access to medical marijuana for those patients who rely on it.

r455669346.jpgWASHINGTON (Reuters) – A high-level international commission declared the global "war on drugs" a failure and urged nations to consider legalizing cannabis and other drugs to undermine organized crime and protect their citizens' health.

The Global Commission on Drug Policy called for a new approach to reducing drug abuse to replace the current strategy of strictly criminalizing drugs and incarcerating drug users while battling criminal cartels that control the drug trade.

DrugSense is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides accurate information about drug policy, offers wide-raging services from an archive of news articles to web hosting, to promotion of broadcast media events. Everyone interested in drug policy issues should be aware of the helpful services it offers, including the Media Awareness Project, or MAP.

Summary of California Marijuana Laws PDF Print E-mail

As a public service, Oaksterdam News provides the following brief summary of California’s current marijuana laws.

• Health and Safety code 11357 -- Having less than 28.5g (an ounce) of marijuana is a $100 fine; hashish or larger amounts are $500 fines, plus possible jail time.

• 11358 -- Prison for cultivation or processing cannabis, or diversion for first time personal garden

• 11359 -- Prison for intent to distribute

• 11360 -- Prison for sales, furnishing or transportation, $100 fine for furnishing less than 28.5g

• 11361 -- Prison for involving a minor

• 11362.5 -- Exemption to 11357 and 11358 for qualified people with a physician’s approval

• 11362.7 -- Voluntary medical ID cards, limited immunity from 11357, 11358 for up to eight ounces of bud and six mature plants, limited immunity from HS 11570, 11359, 11360, and 11366

• 11362.8 -- Prison for violating ID card program

• 11366 -- Maintaining a place where cannabis is sold or cultivated (also 11366a, 11570)

• Vehicle Code 23222 -- Transportation of less than 28.5g.
